Neurotoxin (botox) injection pre-care and aftercare

If you are considering nuerotoxin (botox) injections, you may be wondering about steps to follow before and after application. While nuerotoxin application has many esthetic benefits, it can also help with functional issues including TMD (temporomandibular disorder). Dr. Victor Carreno of TopDental in Manta, Ecuador, is trained in neurotoxin application in the maxillo-facial area, and recommends the following steps before treatment:

Starting a few days before treatment, avoid NSAIDS like Advil, aspirin and Aleve, as these blood thinners can increase the risk of bruising and swelling after neurotoxin application. If these medications are prescribed, ask your doctor if temporary suspension is recommended.
To further lower your risk of bruising, avoid alcohol for a few days before your injections, and coffee or other caffeinated drinks on the day of application.
If you follow a retinol regimen, consider pausing a couple days before botox.
Eat a healthy breakfast before your appointment in order to avoid lightheadedness.

After treatment:

Avoid touching, massaging or applying pressure to the injection areas for a few days. Avoid lying down for a few hours after treatment, and don't lie face down for a few days.
Wait a full day before engaging in strenuous exercise or activities that increase blood pressure, as they can heighten the risk of bruising, swelling, and the spreading of the product.
Abstain from alcohol consumption for 24 hours post-injection to minimize bruising risk.
Continue to avoid blood thinners for a day after your Botox treatment.
Reintroduce retinol into your skincare routine after two days.
