Oral Health and the Risk of Alzheimer's Disease

Did you know that one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself from Alzheimer's disease is to maintain good oral health?

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain disorder with no cure that causes memory loss and cognitive decline, and is the most common cause of dementia in older adults. Recent studies have revealed that dental health and brain health are much more interconnected than we may have thought - read on to learn why it is important to keep our oral health in top shape as we age.

The link between oral health and Alzheimer's disease

Recently, researchers have found a link between gum disease (or gingivitis, periodontitis) and Alzheimer's disease. Gum disease is a bacterial infection that affects the gums and the bones that support the teeth. It is the most common chronic disease in the world, affecting more than half of adults over the age of 30.

The bacteria that cause gum disease can enter the bloodstream and travel to the brain. Once in the brain, these bacteria can trigger inflammation and damage nerve cells. This damage can lead to memory loss, cognitive decline, and other Alzheimer's-related symptoms.

How to maintain good oral health

There are a number of things you can do to maintain good oral health and reduce your risk of Alzheimer's disease. These include:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time.

  • Floss your teeth once a day.

  • Use a mouthwash that contains fluoride.

  • See your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.

  • Eat a healthy diet that is low in sugar and processed foods.

  • Get regular exercise.

  • Manage stress.

Maintaining good oral health is an important part of overall health and well-being. By following the tips above, you can help protect yourself from Alzheimer's disease and other health problems.
